CLEARWATER - Joey Cihak drew a crowd Saturday at a motorcycle show featuring bike builders. At 16, he was the youngest entrant and the only one with a motorcycle frame made entirely from welded chains. There were plenty of unconventional bikes among the 54 entered in the custom bike building contest at the Tampa Bay Motorcycle Expo and Florida Builder Invitational. The Harborview Center show attracted about 2,000 people Saturday and continues today. It offers vendors selling everything from motorcycle insurance to tattoos and apparel, and the unique bikes, each with its own story. Cihak, a sophomore at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg, obliged those wanting to pose for pictures and often was encouraged by admirers to chase his dream of becoming a certified master bike builder....

New group backs rally

The lack of an official Independence Day motorcycle rally this year might have put a damper on some in the Hollister community, but others have worked up plans for what they hope will be a bigger and better rally. Now a new group has been put together with the intention of hosting an organized Independence Day motorcycle rally for 2007. Organizers say the new motorcycle rally committee reflects many different backgrounds. One of the biggest changes from past events is that the new organizers want to structure the event more like the Garlic Festival, where local nonprofit groups all work with the organizers and split a portion of the proceeds, this according to Paul Levy, treasurer of the newly formed steering committee. "Basically, the way we're envisioning it now, it would be the same set-up we had in 2005, where the majority of the rally would be downtown, but hopefully Dave Grimsley would also be able to get permits for an event out at Bolado [Park]....

MILWAUKEE Union officials say Harley-Davidson and leaders of its major Milwaukee-area union have reached an agreement aimed at inducing the motorcycle manufacturer to undertake a 120 (m) million expansion in that area. United Steelworkers Local 2-209 president Jim Wheiland says the new proposal includes a two-tier wage system for newly hired employees of the motorcycle manufacturer, but with smaller gaps than an agreement which the local rejected last month. Wheiland says the new agreement, which is to be voted on next week, protects existing part-time employees who are members of the union by putting them at the higher wage structure if they are hired full time. The union president says cuts in pension plans, health insurance and cost of living adjustments remain. But he says the new agreement contains explicit language saying the company will stop studying expanding elsewhere if the union agrees to the cuts....

Minor repairs were all that were needed to fix most of the playground equipment in the city, but parts of the Skate Park remain closed until damaged surface areas can be repaired. A fall audit report revealed minor problems with Beatrice playground equipment, but major repairs were found to be needed at the skateboard park. In the audit report released this week, Beatrice Public Properties employees found no major infractions or unsafe manufacturing defects to any park playground equipment, other than the skateboard park, where two structures were barricaded from public use. Last week, in response to a letter in the Beatrice Daily Sun, Beatrice Mayor Dennis Schuster called for an audit of all city park playground equipment and the skateboard park....
